플라스마(PLASMA)란?
플라스마 (고대 그리스의 πλάσμα는 "성형 가능한 물질"을 의미함)은 이온화된 기체 물질이 장거리 전기장과 자기장안에서 물질의 거동을 지배하는 지점까지 전기 전도성이 높아지는 상태이다.
플라스마는 이온화된 가스와 닮은 물질의 상태이다. 이 이온화는 플라스마가 전자기장의 영향을 받아 플라스마가 어떻게 작용하는지에 크게 영향을 준다.
이것은 물질의 4가지 기본 상태중 하나이며 1920년대 화학자 Irving Langmuir에 의해 처음으로 기술되었다. 고체, 액체 및 가스의 다른 세 가지 상태와 달리, 플라스마는 정상적인 표면 상태에서 지구상에 자유롭게 존재하지 않으며, 중성가스를 가열하거나 강한 전자기장을 가함으로써 인위적으로만 생성될 수 있다.
실생활에서는 형광등, 네온사인등이 플라스마가 적용된 사례라고 할 수 있다.
독일에서는 일찍이 이런 플라즈마를 이용한 미용기술과 의료분야기술에 응용하여 앞서고 있다.

플라스마와 이온화된 가스는 다른 상태와는 달리 독특한 성질과 행동을 보이며, 그 사이의 전이는 대부분 명명하기 나름이며 해석의 대상이 된다. 주변 환경, 온도 및 밀도에 기초하여, 부분적으로 이온화되거나 완전히 이온화된 형태의 플라즈마가 생성될 수 있다. 네온 사인이나 번개 폭풍은 부분적으로 이온화된 플라즈마의 예이며, 태양의 내부와 일식 때 나타나는 코로나(일식환), 별 등은 완전히 이온화된 플라즈마의 예이다.
이온의 양전하는 원자핵으로부터 전자를 제거함으로써 얻어진다. 제거된 전자의 수는 온도의 증가 또는 다른 이온화 물질의 국부적 밀도와 관련이 있다. 이것은 또한 분자 결합의 해리를 동반 할 수 있지만, 이 과정은 액체에서의 이온 상호작용의 화학적 과정 또는 금속에 존재하는 이온의 작용과 분명히 다르다. 전자기장에 대한 플라스마의 반응은 플라스마 TV 또는 플라스마 에칭과 같은 많은 현대의 기술 장치에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
현재 암흑물질(우주에 널리 존재할 것으로 추정되지만 아직 직접 관측하지는 못한 물질)의 존재와 알려지지 않은 특성을 기반으로 한 임시적인 가설일 뿐이지만, 플라즈마는 우주에서 가장 풍부한 형태의 보통 물질일 수 있다. 플라스마는 주로 별과 관련되어 있으며, 희박한 은하단 내부매질(ICM)과 더불어 심지어는 은하간 영역으로 확장된다.
